Among special guests of the festival we’ll have a pleasure to host Maciej Obara International Quartet, the members of which, together with a graphic designer Marian Oslislo, are preparing an original and unique audiovisual spectacle in tribute to one of the greatest jazz genius – John Coltrane.
John Coltrane, a real symbol of spirituality in art, has always inspired research on absolute in his music. This audiovisual show will allow young audience to know his artistic legacy presented in an original, attractive and innovative form using both sound as well as verbal message. On the other hand, jazz connoisseurs will both hear and see a contemporary and highly creative personal interpretation of John Coltrane’s timeless music.
This interdisciplinary project is based on combination of sound and sign – two natural and oldest means of communication – in a common, universal and ultramodern tale of music.
„Hommage à Coltrane”’s main theme are the pieces of Coltrane’s statements and interviews as well as the comments made by his friends, artists, critics and journalists who try to face his genius. John Coltrane himself was also aware of this strong connection between sound and image.
As he said: „Over all, I think the main thing a musician would like to do is give a picture to the listener of the many wonderful things that he knows of and senses in the universe. […] That’s what I would like to do. I think that’s one of the greatest things you can do in life and we all try to do it in some way. The musician’s is through his music.”
Calligraphy – hand lettering and graphics created both simultaneously and spontaneously by a graphic-designer, will contribute to the visual sphere of the show. By doing so, visual narrative developing the dramaturgy of the show will serve the musicians as an impulse to create an authorial musical statement based on incomparable Coltrane’s music.
